Apple crisp, need help with this new idea from you, please.?

Jul 25th, 2010

My oven died right before Thanksgiving but I do have a toaster oven that works well. I also have mini quiche plates/bowls to use. I also have small bread/muffin pans that would fit as well. Now, I have apples and cranberries, oatmeal, flour and butter so I was wanting to make an apple/cranberry chutney crisp for my husband and myself but I’m not sure if I should add sugar to the berries or chop them in my cuisinart first or par cook them.

Has anyone ever made anything like this before? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Please answer with a cranberry answer as I already know how to make apple crisp. Thanks.

What to buy at Crate & Barrel? Food Processor, Bowls, Grill Pan Decisions?

Jul 12th, 2010

I have been sitting on a gift certificate to Crate and Barrel for over a year now. Every time I go to their website I can’t ever make up my mind, because I want it all and can’t afford it. Help me!!

I need a mini food processor. I’ve never had one so no idea what constitutes a good food processor. They have two on their website. One by Kruk for bucks and one by Cuisinart for bucks. I want to use it to chop nuts, make sauces, and chop small amts of vegies. Which one should I get?

Cuisinart: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=636&f=44

The second decision is between a prep mixing bowl set and a grill pan. I hate my old dirty mixing bowls and have been wanting a new set..but alas, I do have mixing bowls. Plus I like the set on CB because it has lids. bucks for that. The pan: I love to grill, but we have a charcoal grill outside that just seems like a pain in the butt to use to me. I would like a great pan that I can use on my stove to grill chicken, burgers, and fish and not have to rely on the hubby for my grilling needs. Its bucks.

Pan: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=489&f=3724

Thanks for helping me! I’m the most indecisive person!

Is a food processor with a shredding blade much better than one without?

Jun 30th, 2010

I am considering two food processors, listed below. The main difference appears to be the fact that one has a shredding blade capability. I am new to food processing, and I don’t know if this is an important feature. Is it important? I hope to make Indian food purees, soups, hummus, salsa, and other items.

Magic Bullet Food Processor…?

Jun 19th, 2010

My son eats pureed foods and I’ve tried the Cuisinart Mini Food Prep Prossesor…. BOOOO!!! It smelled like the motor was going to burn up… And it wasn’t even working that hard! And it left big chuncks of food. I’m using a blender now… and it’s such a pain to get all of the food out from around and under the blades! It takes so long just to blend up his foods. I was wondering if the Magic Bullet would be good for the use I need it for? Or maybe a different food processor? I was thinking of saving up some money and buying one of the good ones… Like the 0-200 ones… I’m just tired of dealing with the blender…

Magic Bullet Mixer???

Jun 8th, 2010

I love homemade salsa with tomatoes, peppers, onions, cilantro, etc.. I have a little mini cuisinart chopper but it tends to liquefy things. Does the Magic Bullet do a good job of chopping up things without making mush? Bell peppers especially get real gooey and nasty, how does the Magic Bullet handle these? Is it dishwasher safe? If you have one, what do you think of it overall?

How do you eat flaxseed? (vegan)?

May 29th, 2010

They are un-hulled. I put them in the mini cuisinart and they did not grind. I put them in the cheapo coffee grinder and they also did not grind. WTF. Can I just eat them with the hull?
