Apple crisp, need help with this new idea from you, please.?

Jul 25th, 2010

My oven died right before Thanksgiving but I do have a toaster oven that works well. I also have mini quiche plates/bowls to use. I also have small bread/muffin pans that would fit as well. Now, I have apples and cranberries, oatmeal, flour and butter so I was wanting to make an apple/cranberry chutney crisp for my husband and myself but I’m not sure if I should add sugar to the berries or chop them in my cuisinart first or par cook them.

Has anyone ever made anything like this before? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Please answer with a cranberry answer as I already know how to make apple crisp. Thanks.

I’d add the cranberries to the diced apples and then add the sugar mixture (whatever mix you are using… sugar/brown sugar and cinnamon…???) and mix thoroughly.. fill your tins, pan(s) and the put on the crumb topping. I’m assuming that’s flour/sugar/butter?

The cranberries will make it more tart… you might want to add a bit more sugar.. but I don’t know if I’d add much.. would depend on the ratio of the two fruits….

My taste buds are thinking that the cranberries would add a nice tartness to a sweet apple crisp.

The crisp recipe that I use doesn’t require apples to be pre-cooked. You just toss the sliced apples in a flour, cinnamon, sugar mixture and put them in the pan.

    Here is the recipe:

There’s an easy tool to halve the recipe or double it or third it or whatever you need, and it should be a snap to separate the apples into little dishes and sprinkle with the topping.

    I hope this helps.
